What type of work is available in Singapore?
A variety of work is available in Singapore.There is a high demand for speech therapy services in special schools and early intervention centres. In addition, hospitals regularly open up positions in both paediatric and adult services, as current expatriates complete their contracts and return home.
Is it necessary to speak a local language?
It is not necessary, but it is certainly a bonus if you can. Mandarin is widely spoken, and Chinese dialects such as Hokkien, Teochew and Cantonese are commonly used in the elderly population. Malay and Tamil are the other official languages of Singapore (there are four - English, Mandarin, Tamil and Malay). As English is the medium of education in Singapore, it is possible to get by with English, particularly with a paediatric caseload. However, if you work with adults, an interpreter is probably necessary.
Is there a locum register?

There certainly is! The profession is small in Singapore, with approximately 150 clinicians island-wide for a population of 4 million.
How can I get an employment pass?
When you have an offer of employment from a service provider here, the service provider will typically facilitate the employment pass application for you. Employment passes typically take between four to eight weeks to process.
If you wish to set up a private practice, you will have to register with the Registry of Companies and Businesses, and apply for a special employment pass. You may also be required to obtain approval from the Ministry of Health or Ministry of Education (depending on the context of your work).
Is there an age limit on working holidays?
The concept of working holidays (such as in the United Kingdom) does not exist in Singapore. There are no age restrictions for working here if a service provider is prepared to hire you and be your 'local sponsor' for the employment pass.
