Speech therapy links for clients

Got a question about speech therapy?
There is lots of useful information about speech therapy on the internet. You might be a parent concerned about your child's speech and language development; or perhaps someone close to you has just had a stroke, can't talk or eat properly and you don't know what to do.

The following links provide some help in answering questions you might have. But remember, the best advice will always come from the speech therapist working with you or your loved one. Only they know the unique circumstances of the case, and the best therapy is individualised for the person involved.

Communication Connects website
This site contains easily understood information about communication disorders, and provides ideas for home activities that nurture speech/language development.

Speech Pathology Australia Fact Sheets
(click on 'Fact Sheets' in the Quick Links box at the bottom of the page)
These fact sheets provide some answers to basic questions such as "What is a speech pathologist?", "What is a communication disability?", "Helping your baby to talk", "Learning to speak and listen: what to expect in the first five years" and "The sounds of speech: ages and stages in children's speech" amongst others.

Speech/Hearing Checklist
Speak, Read, Succeed Interactive Checklist. On this site you click on a button indicating your child's age, and then you are asked a series of questions that will help determine if your child is at risk of having difficulty with verbal and written communication. Once you have submitted the answers, the checklist will tell you how your child is progressing. Note this is intended as an indication only and does not replace a speech therapy assessment.

MedlinePlus Speech and Communication Disorders
Provides links to general information on speech and language development; information on specific disorders; and latest news in speech/language research. This is an American site and some of the information is specific to America (eg the "How to find a speech-language pathologist" section).

Hardin Meta Directory of Internet Health Sources - Speech Therapy
